CONTROLLING OFFICER'S REPLY TOWRITTEN/SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTION
Head: 23 - Auxiliary Medical Service
  Subhead
(No. & title):
000 Operational Expenses
  Programme: Auxiliary Medical Service
Controlling Officer: Chief Staff Officer, Auxiliary Medical Service
  Bureau Secretary: Secretary for Security
Question : A total of 351 new members were recruited in 2004, much fewer than the 671 members recruited in 2003. Why? Is there any difficulty in recruitment? Will this affect the performance of the Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS)? Any measures to boost recruitment?
  Asked by: Hon. CHAN Bernard
Reply: The number of actual man-hour in the recruit training is calculated in accordance with the number of new recruits and the number of training hours they actually attend in that year. Owing to the SARS outbreak in 2003, the number of new recruits required was greater than the estimated wastage in the same year. In addition, because of the reduced turnover rate in 2004, the number of new recruits required for topping up was only 351, resulting in a substantial decrease in the number of actual man-hour in the recruit training.
